Blubellie
Every child in Relegatia knows the world was a wild and perilous place before the humans colonized it. Dragons ruled over land, water and skies. That is, until the gods banished them. From that day the humans fight the wilderness. Kaiser beasts, lawalruses, pterodactyls, sand worms, and other monsters incorporated the newcomers into their diet. As it turns out, Relegatia is a world where only the strongest survived.
But one creature seems to defy that natural law: The blubellie.
»It's neither dangerous nor obedient. It tastes disgusting, its hide is brittle. And its blood isn't poisonous. To be precise, there is no more useless animal in all of Relegatia.«
That's how the imperial hunters' guild describes the blubellie. How this animal eveaded extinction in spite of all its terrible predators is a mystery that Relegatian scholars never quite managed to solve.
There are many theories. For example, it may simply taste worse than other animals. Or perhaps as an omnivore (including boots) it serves an important role in the ecosystem of Relegatia. According to an old folk saying there's another reason: Blubellies just had outrageous luck. This is why the blubellie is a common good-luck charm (just like the lucky pig in our world).
During many a Lyrdhin fair, you can win a plush bellie, but you'd need to be very lucky indeed, as the games there are notoriously rigged.
The Blubellie
One particular blubellie gained special fame. The Blubelle from Cards & Crystals (whoever named it wasn't very creative). As a notorious hecklebellie it interrupts the game's tutorial by eating the player's cards. It also annoys IRIADHIS, the game's AI, with inappropriate comments. It's a good thing blubellie's attempts at speech are not quite intelligible, as otherwise the game's age rating would undoubtedly increase.
As it does in the Relegatian ecosystem, Blubellie serves an important role in the game. If players put excess cards in Blubellie's bowl, they can witness the omnivore in action. On that note, an important notice from the barmaid: Feeding the tavern's furniture to Blubellie is strictly forbidden!
Hundreds of trading cards in Cards & Crystals show many important people and monsters from Relegatia's history. Of course there's a very rare blubellie card as well. It's inspired by the blubellies' reputation as a lucky charm. If you manage to play three blubellie cards in a row you outright win the game. But that's no easy feat considering the high cost and low health of the card. That's why IRIADHIS likes to call Blubellie's card the worst card in the game. Perhaps someone can prove her wrong?
Is Blubellie a bug, a feature, or something else entirely? Play the game and find out.
